{"id":1297,"date":"2014-05-26T08:00:30","date_gmt":"2014-05-26T01:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pharecircus.org\/blog\/?p=1297"},"modified":"2021-11-18T09:30:10","modified_gmt":"2021-11-18T02:30:10","slug":"playing-with-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pharecircus.org\/playing-with-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire Acts at Phare Circus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1303 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/pharecircus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/fire-spinning1-300x289.jpg\" alt=\"Phare Circus circus act - fire baton\" width=\"300\" height=\"289\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Fire Acts at Phare<\/h2>\n<p>Have you ever considered selecting a toy, soaking it in fuel, lighting it on fire, and twirling, tossing or moving it circular motions?\u00a0 Basically, this is the art of fire acts performing \u2013 manipulation\/spinning of objects on fire \u2013 and the art is frequently showcased in Phare productions.<\/p>\n<p>Fire was one of the first great discoveries of humankind, and modern society\u2019s increasing fascination with fire acts is likely rooted in the primal instincts awakened when we see great balls of fire flying through the dark night to the beat of the drums (don\u2019t forget all Phare performances are accompanied by a live band).<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1304 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/pharecircus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/fire-spinning2.jpg\" alt=\"Phare Circus fire act - spinning fire ropes\" width=\"600\" height=\"358\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some of the first fire arts came from Samoa in the form of the fire knife dance. This art was a demonstration of a Samoan warrior\u2019s battle prowess.\u00a0 Other cultures historically have turned up the heat with fire arts, including the Aztecs, Balinese, and the Polynesians.\u00a0 However, since the 1990s, the practice of playing with fire has expanded tremendously, and is now widely practiced at music festivals, raves, beach parties, and night clubs, and of course \u2013 the circus has taken the art to a whole different level&#8230;<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1305 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/pharecircus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/fire-spinning3.jpg\" alt=\"Phare Circus fire act - artist with fire baton\" width=\"401\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpinning fire\u201d is a term referring to certain apparatuses used in fire performance, including poi and staff, and even a flaming jump rope \u2013 all pictured here from Phare performances. The various fire \u201ctools\u201d are outfitted with absorbent wicks on their ends which are soaked in a mild fuel such as white gas or kerosene\/paraffin oil.
