Sculptures on temples in the Kompong Thom Province and ancient carvings near the Angkor Wat Temple and the Bayon Temple, all depict images of Cambodian traditional circus arts that date as far back as the VI century. Carvings show acrobats, contortionists, magicians, Jugglers, dancers, clowns, and even animals such as snakes and monkeys.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9025\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9025\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9025\" src=\"https:\/\/pharecircus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Claudia-Cooper@claud26point2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-9025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Faces of Bayon by Claudia Cooper<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Circus performances appeared and reappear between times of peace and war. Based on information available, there are no records found that circus shows existed between the fall of Angkor (1353) and the war in the late 20th century. This art was revived, however, by King Norodom Sihanouk in 1960, but it was outlawed in 1975 by the Khmer Rouge, as well as all other forms of art and culture.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6248 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/pharecircus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Eclipse-Camille-Malafosse-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the Vietnamese occupation in 1979, the totalitarian reign of the Khmer Rouge ended and the state created the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsoc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Circus School of Cambodia<\/a> in Phnom Penh. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A foundation class was soon created which paved the way for teachers and students and a career in circus arts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Birth of Phare<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the Paris Peace Agreement was signed in 1991, many refugees from various border camps returned home. Among the refugees, a group of nine young people wanted to help rebuild the country. They were taught by a French volunteer who showed them how to use art to cope with trauma, poverty and abuse and set out to create the Association <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/phareps.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phare Ponleu Selpak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cBrightness of Art,\u201d in 1994.
