It&#8217;s a funny and spooky show full of aerial acrobatics and high-energy group acts. It also has a playful score performed live by three talented musicians, Pitou, Bora and Danith. All three are graduates of the music school at Phare Ponleu Selpak in Battambang. Here&#8217;s what they think about the show and what it&#8217;s like to be a\u00a0circus musician.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_5723\" style=\"width: 175px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/\/pharecircus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Scott_Sharick_Photo__2016_37653.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5723\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5723\" class=\"wp-image-5723 \" src=\"\/\/pharecircus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Scott_Sharick_Photo__2016_37653-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Scott_Sharick_Photo__2016_37653\" width=\"165\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pitou outside the big top. (Photo by Scott Sharick)<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Pov Pitou started attending school at Phare Ponleu Selpak in 2007 and he began performing in 2009 in the show Kon Khmoch.\u00a0 He later joined the show Chills, which he&#8217;s still a part of now. He plays a mix of western and traditional Khmer instruments the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roneat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roneat<\/a> (Cambodian xylophone), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Khim<\/a>\u00a0(a type of hammered dulcimer), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tro_Khmer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tro<\/a>\u00a0(a bowed string instrument made from coconut and animal skin), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Traditional_Cambodian_musical_instruments#Drums\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skor<\/a> (Khmer drum made from wood and and animal skin), as well as guitar and bass. He says his favorite instruments are the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roneat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roneat<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Traditional_Cambodian_musical_instruments#Drums\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skor<\/a>. In the future, when he retires from Phare, he wants to be a music teacher.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Pho Bora joined Phare Ponleu Selpak in Battambang 10 years ago and he moved to Siem Reap in 2013. <a href=\"\/\/pharecircus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/DSC_2940.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5717\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5717 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/pharecircus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/DSC_2940-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_2940\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a>Bora started learning music in 2004. After studying for six months he started performing. He performed with many different student groups at Phare. He performed in the shows Phum Style, Holiday, Chills and Ontong. Bora has traveled to many countries as part of his studies with Phare including France, Portugal, Belgium, The Netherlands, Japan, Laos. He plays the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roneat_dek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roneat Dek<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roneat_ek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roneat ek<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roneat_thung\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roneat Thong<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kong_toch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kong Toch<\/a> ,<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kong_thom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kong Thom<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Khim<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khloy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Khloy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Traditional_Cambodian_musical_instruments#Drums\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skor<\/a>. His favorite instruments are the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roneat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roneat<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Khim<\/a>. In the future he wants to make something new, to create new music to play in a Phare show. After he retires from Phare, he wants to run his own business or work as an accountant. In fact, in addition to performing in Chills, he currently works as an intern in the Phare accounting department.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Deab Danith joined Phare Ponleu Selpak in grade 7.<a href=\"\/\/pharecircus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_3687-e1455004313504.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5722\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5718 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/pharecircus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_3687-e1455004313504-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\"><\/a>When she first came to school she didn\u2019t like music so much, but her mother wanted her to learn to play Khmer instrument, so she decided to try and found out that she was a good musician. As part of her studies at Phare she performed in Germany in 2010.\u00a0 She can play perfectly the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roneat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roneat<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Khim<\/a>, but the instrument she loves most is the <a href=\"https:\/\/km.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E1%9E%81%E1%9F%92%E1%9E%9F%E1%9F%82%E1%9E%8A%E1%9F%80%E1%9E%9C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Khsae Deav<\/a>. She says she wants to learn to play\u00a0 the <a href=\"https:\/\/km.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E1%9E%81%E1%9F%92%E1%9E%9F%E1%9F%82%E1%9E%8A%E1%9F%80%E1%9E%9C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Khsae Deav<\/a>, but it\u2019s difficult to learn and she needs to find a teacher. She has performed in many Phare shows, and is now performing in Chills.
