{"id":8812,"date":"2022-03-07T14:20:30","date_gmt":"2022-03-07T07:20:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pharecircus.org\/?p=8812"},"modified":"2022-09-22T13:48:22","modified_gmt":"2022-09-22T06:48:22","slug":"womens-day-women-of-phare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pharecircus.org\/womens-day-women-of-phare\/","title":{"rendered":"Women&#8217;s Day: Women of Phare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By Sunita Mager\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>What does International Women&#8217;s Day mean to the women artists of Phare Circus?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>March 8th <\/strong>marks International Women\u2019s Day, and at Phare, we celebrate and salute the Women of Phare for their immense contributions in shaping the society and for being role models to Cambodian youth today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pharecircus.org\/meet-stars-choub-kanha\/\">Choub Kanha<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/pharecircus.org\/meet-the-stars-sreyleak\/\"> Nov Sreyleak,<\/a> two of our talented and busiest stars of the Phare family, have been performing in Siem Reap since 2013. They\u2019ve grown and matured into famous professional performing artists and have proven to themselves, their families and to Cambodian young women that with strong determination anything is possible!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>What does International Women\u2019s Day mean to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8814\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8814\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8814\" src=\"https:\/\/pharecircus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Kanha-Choub-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Choub Kanha,Eclipse Show, Phare Circus, Cambodia\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8814\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Choub Kanha rehearsing for <a href=\"https:\/\/pharecircus.org\/calendar-productions\/\/sokrias-eclipse\/\">Eclipse<\/a><br \/>Photo by Scott Sharick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kanha: Women\u2019s Day is a celebration of all women coming together to celebrate being a woman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sreyleak: When I was young, Women\u2019s Day had no real meaning; it was an ordinary day. It wasn\u2019t until I began my career and became a wife that I understood what an important day it is. For me it\u2019s a time when I reflect on memories with my mother and sister.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the traditional views of women in society? What has changed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kanha: Many people believe that women are weak and soft. But that is not true. Cambodia is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still very traditional, for example, arranged marriages are still common, many think women belong in the kitchen and that they don\u2019t need any education. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sreyleak: But we see how things are changing too. There are more young women in schools, and they are getting well-paid jobs after graduation. We have been lucky. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kanha: We were given opportunities to study and to participate in social networks and we are motivated to achieve our dreams in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>As a performer, you need to be mentally and physically strong. Do you think women today need to be just as strong?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sreyleak: Yes, I do. They need to be strong enough to handle various tasks, multitask and support their families. But women also need to be gentil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you envision Cambodia in the future for women?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sreyleak: My hopes for women in Cambodia is that they will continue and finish school and become strong leaders in society. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kanha: &#8230;With less traditional pressure. I think in the future women will be better educated, have their own businesses and develop into independent women that are just as confident as men are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you encourage young women?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both: By being role models. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kanha: If there are no role models, women can not be successful. We need to show them how to overcome real life struggles, give them hope, confidence and opportunities to study and succeed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is your message to young women in Cambodia?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both: Be strong, determined, focused on your goal and stay away from drugs!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Sunita Mager\u00a0 What does International Women&#8217;s Day mean to the women artists of Phare Circus?
